What fruits are in season in autumn in Japan? Here are some representative fruits, in order of earliest in season.
Momo (Peaches)
Peaches are in season from June to September. Peaches produced in Japan are soft and sweet and are among expensive fruits. There are three types of peaches, divided by breeding lineage: white phoenix, white peach, and golden peach.
Budou (Grapes)
Grapes are in season from August to October. There are many varieties, and it is said that there are more than 10,000 varieties in the world. Grapes are roughly classified by the color of their skins: red, black, and green (white).
Ichidiku (Figs)
Figs are in season from August to October. The sweet flesh and the texture of the mashed seeds are addictive and delicious, and they are used not only fresh but also in compotes and jellies. Figs are grown in Wakayama, Aichi, Fukuoka, and Hyogo prefectures.
Ringo (Apples)
The apple season is from September to December, and it is said that there are around 100 varieties of apples grown today. The main apple production area is Aomori Prefecture. More than half of the apples are produced in Aomori, far ahead of the second largest prefecture, Nagano. Other regions, such as Yamagata and Iwate in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido, also produce apples.
Kaki (Persimmon)
Persimmons are in season from October to November. Many varieties of persimmons are available. It can be said that persimmons are synonymous with autumn fruits. The large number of varieties means that there is a wide range in the season. However, most varieties are harvested between September and December, so it seems that the position of "autumn is the best season for persimmons" is unshakable in Japan.
Recently, advances in cultivation technology have made it possible to eat a variety of fruits regardless of the season, but the taste of fruits in season is exceptional! Not only do they taste better, but their nutritional value is also said to be higher when they are in season.
