Bento - Japanese packed meals

Bento - Japanese packed meals

From ancient times, Japan has established a unique culture of Bento(弁当 ), or single-serve packed meals. It is said that the origin of Bento started when aristocrats packed meals for picnics under the spectacular views of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

In modern times, bento boxes strongly reflect the Japanese people's commitment to food. There are wide varieties of bento such as “Eki-ben (駅弁)” (shortened term for “station bento”) sold at train stations which are packed with local dishes, and adorably decorated “Chara-ben (キャラ弁)” (shortened term for “character bento”) which are popular among children. Regardless of the types, they are all made with care for nutrition and beautiful color coordination. The design aspect is especially remarkable in Chara-ben, where the food is arranged to look like popular characters and also decorated with designed food picks and colorful food cups. They are all full of ideas to make everyones’ lunchtime much more enjoyable.
